چکیده

Diesel engines used in power plants and marine propulsion are especially sensitive to outage events. Any advance in the early detection of failure will increase the reliability of the electricity supply and improve its productivity by reducing costly power outages. Fault detection and diagnosis is important technology in condition-based maintenance for diesel engines. This article presents a classifier based on neural networks for identifying failure risk level in crankshafts, the engine component of greatest cost concern. The authors have developed a finite element model for crack growth that fits well with fracture appearance and produces the evolution of crankshaft stiffness with crack depth. A lumped system model of the engine uses this evolution as input, giving the instantaneous speed at the engine flywheel as a function of crack depth. All the results shown in the paper come from outputs of the simulation models which have been built from real engine data. Measurements of the instantaneous flywheel speed were not available due to the crankshaft failure. All data are extracted from this speed and are then classified using a Radial Basis Function neural network. & 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Double Cracks Identification in Functionally Graded Beams Using Artificial Neural Network

This study presents a new procedure based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for identification of double cracks in Functionally Graded Beams (FGBs). A cantilever beam is modeled using Finite Element Method (FEM) for analyzing a double-cracked FGB and evaluation of its first four natural frequencies for different cracks depths and locations. The obtained FEM results are verified against availab...

Damage Assessment using an Inverse Fracture Mechanics approach

This paper studies the application of an inverse methodology for problem solving in fracture mechanics using the finite element analysis. The method was applied to both detection of subsurface cracks and the study of propagating cracks. The procedure for detection of subsurface cracks uses a first order optimization analysis coupled with a penalty function to solve for the unknown geometric par...

Fatigue Performance of Forged Steel and Ductile Cast Iron Crankshafts

Fatigue is the primary cause of failure of crankshafts in internal combustion engines. The cyclic loading conditions and the stress concentrations in the crank pin fillets are unavoidable, and can result in fatigue failure. The objectives of this study were to compare the fatigue behavior of forged steel and ductile iron crankshafts from a one-cylinder engine as well as to determine if the fati...

Engineering Critical Assessments of Marine Pipelines with 3D Surface Cracks Considering Weld Mismatch

Offshore pipelines are usually constructed by the use of girth welds, while welds may naturally contain flaws. Currently, fracture assessment procedures such as BS 7910 are based on the stress-based methods and their responses for situations with large plastic strain is suspicious. DNV-OS-F101 with limited modifications proposes a strain-based procedure for such plastic loads. In this paper 3D ...

Mixed-Mode Stress Intensity Factors for Surface Cracks in Functionally Graded Materials Using Enriched Finite Elements

Three-dimensional enriched finite elements are used to compute mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) for three-dimensional cracks in elastic functionally graded materials (FGMs) that are subject to general mixed-mode loading. The method, which advantageously does not require special mesh configuration/modifications and post-processing of finite element results, is an enhancement of previou...
